About the wine
In Portugal Encruzado is traditionally associated with the Dao region, but it adapts well to the microclimate in Porto Covo. The grapes undergo prolonged skin maceration, resulting in the tantalisingly gorgeous amber colour of this wine and lovely smooth body from the tannins. It is wonderful with food, delicious without; it has hints of peach and apricot, oranges and herbs, a curious flavour profile underpinned by salinity and sharp acidity. It’s unique and we love it.
About the maker
Manuela Perreira thinks dreamily of her childhood in the Douro. In 2010, she returned to Portugal after spending some time in South Africa, with an idea to start an agriturismo and an appreciation of the maritime influence on wines grown by the sea. She bought a plot of land near Porto Covo on the Costa Alentejana but, after failing to get planning permission, needed something else to use the land for. The soil was poor and the land was steep. It reminded her of the Douro…
Today, the team at Monte Carochina make white wine from Arinto and Encruzado, and reds from Alicante Bouschet, Touring Nacional, and Merlot. The exposed vineyards, poor soils and steep slopes make it challenging work - a labour of love and a little madness. The wines are full of personality, just like their maker.
